Ok, so use as much or as little of each ingredient as you like depending on what you like best and how many people you’re feeding! This can be made warm or cold.

Gently fry some onion, red pepper and courgette in olive oil, i cooked mine for about 2-3 minutes. Leave to cool if you like. When ready, place the veg into a bowl with some cooked buckwheat, green lentils, soya beans and rocket (or spinach).

To make the dressing, take 2Tbs olive oil, 1Tbs rice vinegar and place in a jar with 1 Tbs miso paste, 1 inch grated ginger, 1 grated garlic clove, salt and 1/2 tsp sugar. Shake shake shake until it’s all combined and you have a thick and creamy dressing. Pour this over the veg, lentils and buckwheat and stir through. Add some extra grated ginger here if you like! x

Place 1.5 cups of cooked brown lentils in a mixing bowl with one can of chickpeas, a finely chopped bunch of coriander, 1/2 tsp cumin, 3 cloves of garlic, salt, pepper and 1.5 tsp of Ener-G egg replacer (or other liquid egg substitute) Mash with a potato masher until all of the ingredients are well combined. Then stir in about 1/3- 1/2 cup of flour, or enough for the mixture to come together.

Fry for 5 minutes on each side in a hot frying pan.

This is a really cute little dress or top, that’s super easy to make! It took about 4 hours in total. The straps are fully removable, can be tied into a halter neck or be buttoned down at the back. With all measurements, add a 1cm-1.5cm seam allowance. Ok, here’s how I did it. ‘Read More’ for a full step-by-step tutorial and lots more pictures!

What you’ll need

2 fabrics, one for the bottom and bust lining and one for the top, I used a plain pink and bright floral.

Sewing machine

Tape Measure

Pins

Shirring elastic

Matching thread

Buttonhole foot

4 buttons

Hand sewing needle (for buttons)

Iron

Scissors

Instructions

1. Firstly, take a tape measure and measure around the widest part of your bust, right round your back. Then measure, again across the widest part but just from underarm to underarm. Take this number away from the first and you have the measurements of the two top panels. So if when you measured right around your back the number was 30” and from underarm to underarm was 20”, Your front section will be 20” and your back, 10”. Add a few inches to your back section, so that you have room to add shirring. The next measurement is the length, downwards across your bust (again over the widest part) You should measure to just under the bust, where the skirt will begin.

2. Now, for the front section you will need two fabrics, one will act as a lining and provide a more professional finish (not to mention avoiding the need to hem those difficult curved edges!) and the other is the top, decorative fabric. Place the fabrics on top of each other and cut out your predetermined measurements, so if your downward bust measurement was 7” you would cut a rectangle that was 30” by 7” adding your desired seam allowance. So W=30” + 2cm (top & bottom seam allowance) + L= 7” + 2cm.

3. Now place the fabrics right sides together (the patterened side) and fold in the middle. About an inch or so down the folded line, cut and curve up to the top, this will create the sweetheart neckline when unfolded. How deep you cut along the folded line really depends on how low down you want the neckline to come. Unfold the fabric and check that you are happy with the neckline, mess around with it until you have it how you want it. (Keep in mind that an extra cm or so above the neckline needs to be reserved for the seam).

4. With the fabrics still right sides together and neckline sorted, sew around the edge. Up from the bottom of the 7” edge, across and over the neckline and back down the opposite 7” edge. Now take a pair of scissors and make small snips along the curved edges (Make sure you don’t cut through the stitching) This will ensure a smooth curve when it is turned right side out. Now take your stitched front section and turn it the right way out, using a chopstick to push out the corners. The bottom should still be open and un-stitched.

5. Now for the top, back panel! For this section, you don’t need 2 pieces of fabric, just the top floral fabric will work fine. Cut your measured piece, so eg: 10” by 7” adding the 1cm seam allowance few inches to allow shirring. So 10” + 3”=13”x7”.

When you have cut out this piece, roll hem the top, but leave the button edge raw for now. Attach the back section to the front section by seaming at each side. You should be left with something that looks like a slightly baggy, strappless crop top.

6. Now take your bobbin from your sewing machine and hand-wind some shirring elastic onto it, place the bobbin back on your machine and thread up as usual. Now start sewing lines of shirring on the back panel only, from almost seam to seam. You should be sewing onto the RIGHT side of the fabric, if you dont, you’ll end up with elastic on the outside! Start about an inch from the top and stop about an inch or so from the bottom. Now try it on and check that it fits ok, the shirring should mean that it stays up and is not too baggy or tight! If you wanted, you could hem up the bottom, add some straps and leave it as a crop-top or bralet from here.

7. Now you need to take some more of the fabric you used for the underside of the front section. Measure around the widest part of your tummy and hips, take the largest number and add about 5 inches if you want it loose. If you’d prefer it to be more fitted, take your measurement and just add the seam allowance. Now you need to measure how long you want the skirt section to be, do you want to make a top or dress? The easiest way to do this, is to sew it onto the top section, then try it on and snip the fabric where you want it to end (adding seam allowance) then take it off and cut to size.

8. To attach the bottom to the top, you have to gather the skirt section, until it is the same length as our prepared crop top section. To gather it, sew one line of stitching, about 2cm down from the top edge of the fabric. Make sure your sewing machine os on a wide stitch length and leave a long thread at the beggining and end of the stitched line. Now take the thread and pull the fabric along it, it will start to bunch up. Keep doing this until it is the same length as the top.

9. Now pin the bottom section to the top, right sides together. It will look like the top is upside down and is inside the skirt. Using elastic thread again, sew along combining the top and bottom. Making sure you capture both layers of the top, front section. Now sew up the seam at the bag of the skirt, where this seam sits depends on where you started stitching it. I decided to have it at the centre back. Now cut your skirt to the desired length and roll hem the bottom.

10. Now turn it right side out and you should have an almost completed, strapless dress or top :) Inside, where you combined the top and bottom you will have some raw edges, I just zig-zag stitched over all of the edges to make sure they don’t fray and come apart. If you have an over-locker, even better! Now you can just leave the dress like this if you prefer but I added some detachable button straps and a heart shaped pocket!

11. The Straps!

Measure the length between where you want the strap to start on the front, to where you want it to end on the back. Lets say this is 15”, add 1.5” to allow for seams and for the buttonhole. You dont want the buttonhole right on the edge of the fabric. Take the same fabric used for the skirt and cut your desired lengths and thickness. Now curve the ends, this looks much cuter when finished! Stitch along, leaving a gap on the side somewhere for you to turn it right side out. Again, snip along the curved edges, every cm or so. Turn the straps right side out and create your buttonholes, using your buttonhole foot attachment of your sewing machine. (Make sure you make the holes the appropriate size for your buttons, mine measures this automatically.)

Hand stitch some matching, pretty buttons onto the front, where you want the straps to attach, do the same on the back. Now, these straps can be buttoned at the front and tied into a halter neck, buttoned at the front and back for regular straps or completely removed for a strapless dress.

12. The Pocket!

For this part you will need two fabrics again. Draw the heart on paper first so you can get it the right size. Attach this to your two fabrics, cut around. Make sure the fabrics are right sides together and stitch along the heart, leaving a small gap to turn it right side out. Snip along the curves and turn out. Stitch on to the dress, sewing the open section together as you go, leaving the top of heart unattached.

and there you have it, your 3-way adjustable Lolita sweetheart summer dress!

Smoked paprika has quickly become my favourite spice! It can be used in so many ways but watch out, it can be very hot if you use too much!

To make these delicious Tapas-inspired chick peas, heat 1 Tbs of olive oil in a frying pan, add half a red bell pepper, diced and 1 large garlic clove, sliced. Heat through for a couple of minutes, then add 1 heaped Tbs of smoked paprika, 1/2 tsp salt, 1 Tbs of dried, mixed herbs and 1 can of drained and rinsed chick peas. Roughly chop up around 8 cherry tomatoes (or 2 regular ones) and add to the chick peas along with 1 tsp of tomato paste. Finally grate in some black pepper and another garlic clove.

Serve with salad, spelt bread and houmous! Deeeeelish :)

Find the spelt bread recipe in one of my previous posts; here, but instead of using a loaf tin, bake in a square roasting tray and crumble pumpkin seeds on top and throughout!

EVERY CIGARETTE FUNDS CRUEL ANIMAL TESTING. FOR THE PAST FIFTY OR MORE YEARS, THE TOBACCO INDUSTRY HAS BEEN CONDUCTING SECRET ANIMAL TESTING.
SOME PEOPLE OUT THERE MAYBE THINK THAT ANIMAL TESTING IS ACCEPTABLE IF IT’S FOR DRUGS OR SOMETHING THAT IS GOING TO MAKE HUMAN LIFE BETTER. FINE, THAT’S A REASONABLE ATTITUDE. BUT THAT’S NOT WHAT WE ARE TALKING ABOUT HERE. THE TOBACCO INDUSTRY CONDUCTED ANIMAL TESTING TO FIND ANIMALS THAT DID NOT GET SICK FROM SMOKING IN ORDER TO BE ABLE TO LIE TO THE PUBLIC ABOUT THE HEALTH EFFECTS. AND WHEN THEY FOUND ANIMALS THAT DID GET CANCER OR EMPHYSEMA, THEY DESTROYED THE RESEARCH, FIRED THE SCIENTISTS AND MOST LIKELY KILLED THE ANIMALS TOO.

Make a thick...

Baked Thai Coconut Tofu with Asparagus and Greens

Make a thick coconut, lemongrass and ginger sauce, using corn flour to thicken it if you need to.

Cut half a block of firm tofu into 2cm cubes, cover in the sauce and bake for 40 minutes, turning once. Meanwhile, gently stirfry about 7 or 8 asparagus spears with 2 large handfuls of greens in some Tamari, 2 cloves of crushed garlic and 1/4 cup of the coconut sauce.

When the tofu is ready, mix with the asparagus and greens and serve with rice.

APRICOT & ALMOND SPELT BREAKFAST MUFFINS
These turned out...

APRICOT & ALMOND SPELT BREAKFAST MUFFINS

These turned out amazing! If you want to make them vegan, replace the egg with liquid egg replacer (or 1 very ripe mashed banana) and the butter for all olive oil, or any oil of your choice.

Preheat your oven to 170 degrees celsius and line a 12 hole tray with muffin cases.

Combine 200g spelt flour with 150g plain flour in a large mixing bowl. Add 1/12 tsp baking powder, 1/2 tsp bicarbonate of soda, 1/4 tsp salt and 160 golden caster sugar and mix well. Then take 8 apricots and cut into chunks, add to the flour mix and stir through. (coating the apricot in the flour first stops them from sinking to the bottom when cooked - tip from mummy :D)

Now in a jug combine 300ml soya milk, 1 tsp french almond extract and 1 large egg and whisk. Slowly add to the flour and apricot mixture. Now melt 40g butter with 30g olive oil in a saucepan, add this to the muffin mixture. Have a taste to see whether you want to add more almond extract here. Make sure all is well incorporated and then spoon into muffin cases.

Finally, take 6 apricots and slice in half, removing the stone. When the muffins have been cooking for around 10minutes, take them out and place an apricot half and 1 whole almond on top, sprinkling with a little brown sugar. Cook for a total of 25-30 mins.
